Indian Captain Shubman Gill’s determination to break a couple of 100 years old records set by legendary Don Bradman is coming close.
The 25-year-old Gill on Sunday became the third captain in the history of Test cricket to smash four tons in a single series, joining the ranks of legends Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar.
Gill is on the verge of breaking Bradman’s record of scoring 810 runs in a series by a captain. He scored his fourth century (103 runs) in the second innings against England at Old Trafford in Manchester and now needs just 88 runs to break this record. Gill has so far amassed 722 runs in the current Anderson-Tendulkar series as he also geared up to break cricket great Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 732 runs against West Indies in 1978-79 and 774 runs against West Indies in 1971.
By scoring a superb ton, Gill has equaled the four centuries record held by Bradman, Gavaskar and many others in any series. C L Walcott of West Indies with five centuries is at the top in 1954-55 against Australia.
The most imminent milestone before Gill is Bradman’s record of 810 runs as captain during the 1936-37 Ashes series. Bradman’s another world record of scoring a whopping 974 runs by a batter against England in 1930 also looks achievable. These records have stood for more than 100 years.
Interestingly, Gill’s start to the series has been stronger than Bradman’s. The Australian great had scored 394 runs in the first two Tests of the 1930 series, while Gill amassed 585 runs in the first two tests.
The fifth and the last test match will begin on July 31 at Oval.
