Dehradun: A 25-year-old woman from Haryana died after being swept away by the strong current of a river at Dehradun’s popular tourist destination Sahastradhara, while a Class 11 student went missing after being swept away in the swollen Gola river in Udham Singh Nagar district, officials said on Sunday.
Neha Arya, a resident of Panipat in Haryana, along with her friends and relatives visited Sahastradhara where at around 6 pm on Saturday, she reportedly slipped while posing for videos and photographs accidently fell into the fast-flowing river.
People present at the spot immediately raised an alarm. Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel reached the site after receiving information and managed to pull the woman out of the river.
She was subsequently taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
In a separate incident, a Class 11 student went missing after being swept away in the swollen Gola river in the Shantipuri area of Kichha in Udham Singh Nagar district.
According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday when Pawan Chauhan had gone to the river with some of his friends to bathe. During the course of bathing, he reportedly lost his footing and was pulled into deeper water by the strong current. He disappeared within moments.
The two incidents came amid warnings about strong currents and rising water levels in rivers and streams across Uttarakhand during the monsoon. Authorities have repeatedly urged tourists and local residents to avoid entering swollen rivers and to maintain a safe distance from fast-flowing water, particularly near waterfalls and popular spots like Haridwar and Rishikesh.
