Last accused in Brig (retd) Joshi murder case held, all 10 arrested

After escaping the dragnet for nearly a week, the Uttarakhand police has arrested the last accused in the sensational killing of retired Brigadier Mukesh Joshi in the Johari Gaon area of Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand.

“On April 5, 2026, a police team arrested the (last) accused, Vaibhav Kumar, in the Rajpur area (of Dehradun),” a police statement said.

With this, all the 10 Accused Involved in the March 30 Brig Joshi murder case have been arrested, SSP Dehradun Pramendra Singh Dobal said.

Vaibhav Kumar, a native of village Devdhar in Yamunanagar area of Haryana, was absconding. Police teams had been continuously conducting intelligence gathering and surveillance to locate and apprehend him. Viabhav Kumar was arrested yesterday from Rajpur area, a police official said.

Based on a written complaint submitted by the family members of the slain Brigadier Joshi who was caught in the crossfire when he was on morning walk between two group at Johari Gaon area, a case was registered at Rajpur Police Station in Dehradun under Section 103(1) of the BNS (previously 302 of IPC).

Besides Vaibhav Kumar, other nine accused include Rohit Kumar, Mohd. Akhlaq alias Sabir, Sandeep Kumar, Aditya Chaudhary, Aadesh Giri, Sameer Chaudhary, Mohit Arora, Shantanu Tyagi, and Kavish Hussain Tyagi.

Brig (retd) Joshi was killed in the eight rounds of cross-firing after a violent clash between employees of a night club and a group of youths erupted in the morning of March 30.

Last month, two persons were killed in different firing incidents in Dehradun also in the broad daylight with the Doonites expressing widespread concern. A young woman was also hacked to death in the city in February.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a dispute had erupted over the payment of bill between a group of youths and the Zen Z club employees in the wee hours of March 30 on the Mussoorie Road. The dispute led to the clash. After sometime, when the club employees were going home in Fortuner vehicle, they were chased by the youths in Scorpio. Soon, the exchange of fire occurred between the occupants of the two vehicles at Johari Gaon. A bullet struck Joshi, who immediately collapsed on the roadside. Joshi was declared dead in the nearby Max hospital.

After the firing, the Fortuner vehicle went out of control and crashed into a roadside tree. Subsequently, the occupants of the Scorpio tried to physically assault the club employees and vandalized the Fortuner vehicle.
