A magisterial inquiry was ordered on Wednesday after two loco trains collided head-on inside the under-construction 444 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti hydel project on Alaknanda river injuring 60 workers inside its tunnel in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday night.
The inquiry was ordered by Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar after visiting the site of the accident. The top officials also directed the THDC India ltd, which is constructing the project, to conduct its safety audit.
The accident occurred when a locomotive train carrying over 100 workers collided head on with another locomotive laden with the project materials coming from the opposite side. According to officials, rail-like vehicles are used inside the tunnel to transport workers, employees, and materials for construction work.
Upon receiving information about the accident, District Magistrate Kumar and Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Panwar visited the site of the accident and also met the injured admitted in hospital. Only 4-5 workers received serious injuries like multiple fractures and the rest were discharged immediately.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to the Chamoli District Magistrate over phone and took complete information about the accident. He directed that all the injured should be provided best medical facilities.
The project, being built between Helang and Pipalkoti on the Alaknanda River, is designed to generate 444 MW of electricity through four turbines in Chamoli district.
