A 30-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot dead his two married sisters in separate incidents in Roorkee area of Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district, just three days before Raksha Bandhan, police said on Wednesday. \
After shooting two sisters, the accused, Vivek alias Vicky, a resident of Chudiyala village in Bhagwanpur area, allegedly also shot and seriously injured his brother-in-law Sandip, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Preliminary investigation has pointed to Vivek’s suspicion about the character of his sisters as possible motives for the killings. The possibility of a property dispute is also not being ruled out.
Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Navneet Singh said the double murder took place on Tuesday night and the accused was arrested within hours of the incident.
According to police, Vivek first went to the house of his elder sister Shakuntala alias Sangeeta (50) and shot her outside the house. He then went to the residence of his other sister Pushpa (45), where he allegedly opened fire at her and her husband Sandip. Both sisters died of their bullet injuries, while Sandip was seriously injured.
A police complaint was filed at Gangnahar police station by Arjun Singh, Sangeeta’s son. He alleged that his maternal uncle Vivek had shot dead his mother and maternal aunt and seriously injured his maternal uncle. A case under Sections 103(1) and 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the accused for murder and attempt to murder.
Police said that after quickly collecting evidence and activating their informer network, they received information about Vivek’s whereabouts and arrested him near Chudamani Temple Chowk in the Chudiyala area. A .315-bore country-made pistol, six spent cartridges and a motorcycle allegedly used in the crime were recovered from his possession.
During interrogation, police said, Vivek claimed that he believed his sisters’ alleged conduct had brought a bad name to the family. He also allegedly told investigators that his family had become socially isolated and that people had stopped interacting with them. He claimed that this had also affected his prospects of getting married.
Police said the accused allegedly procured the firearm from Muzaffarnagar in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to carry out the killings.
The property dispute angle is also being investigated. Police said Vivek’s mother and other family members would be questioned to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged dispute.
According to police, Vivek had earlier run a coaching centre with his brother and had previously been jailed by the Kankhal police in Haridwar district under an anti-copying law.
Police said further interrogation of the accused is underway to establish the exact motive behind the double murder.
