A man, who shot and injured a Haryana police inspector and was wanted in many other criminal cases, on Sunday committed suicide by a shooting himself from his licensed revolver in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand.
Sunil Kapoor (36) wanted in many cases of cheating and forgery in Haryana fired a gunshot on his head at Laxman Chowk area where he was hiding in a house. Kapoor had fled after shooting and injuring Surendra Kumar, a Haryana police inspector in Haridwar during an encounter on Saturday. The police inspector is out of danger after a surgery at AIIMS Rishikesh where he is admitted.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Ajai Singh said the suicide incident took place when a joint police team of Uttarakhand and Haryana raided the house of one of Kapoor’s relatives in Laxman Chowk area following a tipoff that he was hiding there. When asked to surrender, Kapoor fired a gun shot on his head and died, Singh said.
Kapoor had seriously injured police inspector Surendra Kumar, who had come to arrest him from Jind, by firing two bullets in his hand and stomach near the bus stand in Haridwar on Saturday. Kapoor later fled to Dehradun.
The SSP said the body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem. Kapoor, a resident of Mohalla Bajran in Asarigate area of Jind in Haryana, has many cases registered against him like extortion, defamation, fraud, forgery and making fake documents. The Haryana police probing a letter purportedly written by women police employees in Jind accusing an IPS officer of sexual harassment had found Kapoor’s involvement in the case.
