The Uttarakhand Other Backward Classes Commission has initiated the process to examine the demand for granting OBC status to some parts of Tehri Assembly constituency.

The commission has asked the Tehri District Magistrate to submit a detailed proposal containing socio-economic data and demographic information related to communities residing in the Tehri Assembly constituency. The move follows a letter sent by the state government in May 2026 seeking the commission’s opinion on the issue.

The proposal is expected to include details of communities such as the Tehriya community and other eligible groups living in the constituency. Based on the report submitted by the district administration, the commission will examine whether the demand meets the criteria for inclusion in the state’s OBC list before forwarding its recommendations to the state government.

While people living in neighbouring districts such as Pratapnagar, Uttarkashi and Dehradun enjoy OBC status, several socially and economically backward communities in the Tehri Assembly constituency continue to remain outside its ambit, local residents claimed.

BJP MLA from Tehri Kishore Upadhyaya has also backed the demand and urged the state government to expedite the process. He expressed confidence that the proposal would receive a positive response if all necessary facts and supporting documents were submitted by the district administration.

If approved, the move is expected to extend reservation benefits in education, government employment and various welfare schemes to eligible communities in the Tehri Assembly constituency, a long-pending demand of local residents.
