NHRC issues notices to Uttarakhand on Panacea hospital fire

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday took suo motu cognizance of a media report of a recent fire incident at Panacea, a private hospital, in the Dehradun that left one woman dead and 10 injured.

After the fire broke out in an ICU room on May 20, 14 patients were rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Among them, a female patient was declared dead while 10 were injured.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Uttarakhand Chief Secretary and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

According to the media report, carried on May 21, the fire broke out due to a short circuit in the air conditioner of the ICU, after which later spread to other areas.
