The National Investigation Agency (NIA) early Saturday entered Biali Mosque in Banbhoolpura in Haldwani town of Nainital district in Uttarakhand and arrested its Imam Maulana Mohammad Asim Qasmi in connection with the Red Fort blast.

The NIA personnel were also questioning a couple of people including a Maulana of a mosque in Nainital hill resort also.

Nazar Kamal, a close aide of Qasmi, has also been arrested by NIA. Both the persons were taken to Delhi amid tight security for further interrogations, police sources said.

The arrest came around 2:30 am on Saturday when NIA sleuths with the help of state police entered the Bilalai mosque and immediately took the Imam into custody.

Significantly, a large-scale violence had broken out in Banphoolpura on Feb 8 last year over the demolition of an illegally constructed madrasa which left six people dead and more than 100 people including journalists injured.

Officials said that Delhi Police had received a clue from Haldwani through the call details of a mobile number linked to Dr. Umar Nabi, the main accused in the Red Fort bombing.

They confirmed that the Imam of the Bilali Mosque, and Nazar Kamal, an electrician, were arrested and taken to Delhi.

Following the arrest, a large contingent of police arrived in Banbhoolpura, led by Haldwani City Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Katyal was deployed around the mosque as precautionary step.

On November 10, a car bomb blast near the Red Fort killed 13 people and injured several others.
