Now Yamuna lake poses threat to Syanachatti, several areas inundated

After Bhagirathi, one more temporary lake has been formed on Yamuna river near Syanachatti town in Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand inundating several low-lying areas.

People from all the low-lying areas of Syanachatti town were evacuated on Thursday after the flow of Yamuna was blocked at Syanachatti when a sudden gush of floods and debris from Kupdaagad stream struck the area. However, there was no loss of life in the flash floods, police said.

Nearly 150 people have been sent to safer places so far.

Teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Police, Fire Service, Irrigation Department, Revenue Department including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Barkot are keeping close watch on the situation.

A number of hotels and houses were marooned and a bridge was completely submerged in Yamuna waters.

The people have been warned not to venture near the Yamuna river and stay in safer places, police said.

After the Aug 5 Dharali disaster, a temporary lake has been formed on Bhagirathi river in Harshil area of Uttarkashi district which is also posing threat to low-lying areas.

As the Bhagirarthi river is in spate, efforts are on to open the lake by digging channels with the help of the specialized teams of Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVN) and the state Irrigation Department. Personnel of SDRF are also involved. District Magistrate Uttarakashi Prashant Arya is also closely monitoring the situation.
