The Police have solved the blind murder of a 72-year-old woman in Raipur area in Dehradun arresting a 33-year-old man who allegedly worked at her husband’s bookshop and had been demanding payment of his outstanding wages.
The victim, Rekha Bansal, was found unconscious with injuries on her face at her residence in the Raipur area on Thursday. She was declared dead by an emergency medical team after police reached the spot following a call to the 112 control room.
Police said the accused, Vineet Kumar, allegedly knew that the rear door of the house was usually open. He entered the house when Rekha was alone and demanded payment of his pending wages. A quarrel followed when she refused, police said. Kumar was working at the bookshop belonging to Rekha’s husband at Tehsil Chowk in Dehradun.
According to investigators, Kumar allegedly struck Rekha on the face with a metal bangle he was wearing. When she began screaming, he allegedly pressed her mouth and nose with his hand to prevent her from raising an alarm. She subsequently died, police said.
Kumar allegedly removed a gold bangle from the victim’s hand and fled. He later changed his clothes to evade the police.
A police investigation involving CCTV footage, surveillance and local intelligence led to his arrest near Trilok Guest House on Ring Road. Police recovered the bangle allegedly taken from the victim, the bangle allegedly used in the assault and a mobile phone.
Kumar, a native of Uttarkashi, had worked as a night security guard and had also worked as a helper at the family’s bookshop. Police said he had known the family for around 15 years.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the accused was sent to jail.
