One person was detained after a group of people belonging to a particular community gathered at Patel Nagar in Dehradun on Monday night in protest against an alleged offensive comment on Prophet Muhammad on social media.

According to police, a screenshot allegedly containing an offensive comment on Prophet Muhammad was posted on social media by 19-year-old Gulshan Singh, prompting members of a particular community to gather in the Patel Nagar area to register their protest.

With the crowd gradually swelling, police tried to bring the situation under control and later resorted to mild lathicharge.

As the situation became tense, an intensive combing operation was launched to enforce law and order, and adequate police force was deployed.

Police also registered a case against Singh. Police said the screenshots containing the alleged offensive comment were removed from social media. Gulshan currently lives in the Patelnagar area but originally hails from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh said those attempting to vitiate the atmosphere will not be spared. He said, “Those attempting to disrupt communal harmony and create chaos will not be spared under any circumstances, and strict legal action will be taken against them.”
