One person was stabbed to death following a brawl over a frivolous issue outside a wineshop at Muni-Ki-Reti area near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand prompting the local people to block Rishikesh-Badrinath highway to register their protest against the incident.
After being stabbed, Ajay Kandari (30) was rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh where he was declared dead by doctors early Sunday.
As the news spread, a large number of local people gathered outside the wineshop on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway and blocked the road in protest. They kept the body of Kandari on the highway demanding stern action against the culprit and closure of the wineshop. The protest also created a long traffic snarl for few hours on the highway.
The police has arrested the accused, identified as Akshay Thakur, a resident of Munikireti area.
However, senior administrative officials later persuaded the angry protesters to withdraw their protest late in the evening.
The police is thoroughly investigating all the facts related to the incident and collected necessary evidences from the scene of the crime, a top police official said.
