The Uttarakhand police has intensified its probe into a land fraud after the arrest of the main scamster Pradeep Saklani recently.
The police has also arrested Congress party councillor Amit Bhandari in connection with the land scam.
Pradeep Saklani, who was carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 was arrested by the police along with an associate on May 21. During interrogation, several names surfaced of people allegedly linked to the land fraud racket, prompting top police officials to form special teams for further probe.
The investigation relates to a case registered at Nehru Colony police station under IPC sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B. According to police, Saklani and his associates allegedly forged documents of land belonging to Pratima Lakhiram Kanswal, a resident of Nalasopara in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The accused allegedly prepared fake death certificates of her two sons and sold the Dehradun land to three different buyers.
During questioning, names of Amit Bhandari, Amjad Khan, Shaukat Ali and others surfaced. After analysing evidence, police arrested Amit Bhandari, a Congress councillor, on May 23.
Police are also preparing to seek Saklani’s police custody remand for further interrogation to identify other persons allegedly involved in the fraud.
Officials added that those brought in only for questioning on suspicion were later released and handed over safely to their relatives after being asked to cooperate with the investigation.
