Renowned classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, one of the foremost exponents of the Banaras Gharana, died at the age of 89 early Thursday following a prolonged illness in Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.
PT Mishra who was considered to be an exponent of Khayal and Purab Ang (thumri), was struggling with age-related health issues at his daughter’s house in Mirzapur.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, on 25 January 2010. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan India’s second highest civilian award in 2020. Mishra was the son-in law of Pt Anokhelal Mishra.
Pt Mishra was born on 3 August 1936 in Hariharpur in the Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, at the home of Badri Prasad Mishra. He first learnt music with his father, Badri Prasad Mishra, and was then educated by Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana gharana. He was trained thereafter by Thakur Jaidev Singh.
Pt Mishra’s renditions carried the essence of Kashi’s musical heritage. He mentored countless students in Kashi, ensuring that the city’s musical traditions were preserved and passed on. He had made his home a hub of learning, devotion, and artistic excellence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and recalled his personal association with Pandit Ji, noting the privilege of having received his blessings and support, especially during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when Pandit Ji served as his proposer from the Varanasi constituency, a gesture that symbolized his deep-rooted commitment to the city and its evolving legacy.
Modi has often spoken of Pandit Ji’s affection and blessings, describing them as a personal privilege. Their relationship reflects a shared reverence for India’s classical traditions, spiritual depth, and the transformative power of culture.
Pt Mshra Ji was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour in 2020 by the current Government for his distinguished contribution to Indian classical music.
Modi emphasized that Pandit Ji’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians, artists, and cultural enthusiasts.
