In what appeared to be one of a kind, a bear who killed many dogs and other domestic animals in Thalisain area of Pauri district has been declared dangerous to human lives under the political pressure.

Though the bear has not attacked any human being in the area falling under Srinagar assembly constituency represented by Cabinet Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, the wildlife department said many traps have been set up in the area to capture the bear.

The move to capture bear came after the Cabinet Minister Rawat asked the state wildlife department to declare the bear maneater apparently bowing to the pressure of the villagers from his constituency.

Even HOFF Samir Sinha said he has never heard any story about a bear being declared a dangerous animal. “To my knowledge, I never heard any bear being declared dangerous,” said Sinha.

In 2022, a prominent magazine had carried a news story where a sloth bear attacked and killed a man and his wife in the Panna forest area of Madhya Pradesh. After the death of the couple, a rescue team was called in which tranquilized the bear.  The animal died few hours later.
