A retired Brigadier, who was on a morning walk, was killed in cross-firing on Monday after a violent clash between employees of a night club and a group of students, some from Delhi and Bihar, erupted on Mussoorie Road shattering the peace of Dehradun once again.
Four persons have been arrested so far including Sandip Kumar (43), the owner Zen Z Night Club on Mussoorie road which has also been sealed, SSP Dehradun Pramendra Singh Dobal said adding four more persons involved in the firing are absconding. Kumar is a native of Nagloi in Delhi.
Last month, two persons were killed in different firing incidents in Dehradun in the broad daylight with the Doonites expressing widespread concern. A young woman was also hacked to death in the city in February.
The latest firing incident occurred near Johari Gaon and Malsi zoo on the foothills of Mussoorie where the occupants of two speeding vehicles, Scorpio with no registration number and Fortuner with Delhi registered numbers exchanged 8-9 rounds of fire that led to the killing of Mukesh Joshi (74), a retired Brigadier, who was on the morning walk.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a dispute had erupted over the payment of bill between a group of students and the Zen Z club employees in the wee hours of Monday. The dispute led to the clash. After sometime, when the club employees were going home in Fortuner, they were chased by the students in Scorpio. Soon, the exchange of fire occurred between the occupants of the two vehicles.
A bullet struck Joshi, who immediately collapsed on the roadside, eyewitnesses said. Joshi was declared dead in the nearby Max hospital, a police official said.
After the firing, the Fortuner vehicle went out of control near Johri Gaon and crashed into a roadside tree. Subsequently, the occupants of the Scorpio tried to physically assault the club employees and vandalized the Fortuner vehicle.
All students who were traveling in the Scorpio later fled. “We are trying to nab these four people,” the SSP said.
Besides Sandip Kumar, two others travelling in Fortuner have also been arrested. “We have taken action against both sides,” Dobal said. After the police launched manhunt, Aditya Chaudhary, who was in Scorpio was arrested after the vehicle was seized from the jungles near Thano Road.
Dobal said the police would take strong legal action against all the culprits involved in the grisly incident.
Initially, the occupants of Fortuner had tried to mislead the police claiming it was a road rage incident. But after the rigorous interrogations, they revealed that the dispute had started from the night club and the students in Scorpio tried to take revenge after they were thrashed over the bill payment dispute. Police has also recovered the country-made pistols used in the firing.
