Amid growing concerns over poor quality works, a portion of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa river collapsed during a storm in Hamirpur area in Uttar Pradesh early on Friday leaving six labourers dead.
After the collapse, the district administration launched rescue operations with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directing officials to ensure speedy treatment and compensation to the victims.
The incident occurred around 3 am between Parsani and Kandaur villages when a slab of the bridge being constructed from Maurakandar to Kurara collapsed.
Several labourers who were engaged in the bridge construction work were sleeping on the upper portion of a slab when it suddenly gave way. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospital.
Thirteen persons were killed and many injured after a bridge on the Mahisagar river in Vadodara district of Gujarat collapsed in June last year.
