Eight killed in Mansa Devi stampede (updating)

At least eight people, mostly from Uttar Pradesh, were killed and 30 injured in a stampede at Mansa Devi temple area in Haridwar on Sunday morning, a top police official said.

All the injured were immediately rushed to hospitals in ambulances, SSP Haridwar Pramendra Dobhal said. Some of the seriously injured were admitted to AIIMS in Rishikesh.

Preliminary reports said the stampede occurred at around 9 AM after rumors of electric current spread among the devotees, the SSP said. There were at least four teenagers and a child among those killed.

Video footages and some of the injured people said there was a big rush of pilgrims at Mansa Devi temple when the stampede occurred.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the rescue and relief operations were in full swing at Mansa Devi temple area. “Very sad news has been received about a stampede on the way to Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar,” Dhami wrote on X. Dhami also visited Haridwar to take stock of the situation and meet the injured in the hospitals.

Dhami said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident. SDM Haridwar would conduct the inquiry and submit the report within 15 days, top officials said.

A compensation of Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of the kins of those killed in the stampede, Dhami said. The injured would get a compensation of Rs 50,000.
