Carlos Alcaraz has found an unusual distraction at the US Open — his own outfit.
The defending champion became an unexpected social-media sensation after his loose brown Nike tank top repeatedly shifted during his opening matches, exposing more of his chest than intended. The outfit, a Travis Scott x Cactus Jack collaboration, quickly sparked jokes online, with fans dubbing the episode “Nipplegate.”
But Alcaraz eventually decided enough was enough.
For his third-round clash against China’s Wu Yibing on Friday, the Spaniard added a white undershirt beneath the tank top. Asked about the change after his 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 victory, Alcaraz gave a typically candid explanation.
He said he had been showing “too much nipple” lately and felt more comfortable with the extra layer.
The wardrobe drama had already become a talking point after former Wimbledon finalist and ESPN analyst Eugenie Bouchard joined the fun on social media, joking that Alcaraz needed to “put the nip away.”
Alcaraz, however, appears to be taking it all in his stride. More importantly, his tennis has been just as eye-catching. Returning to competition after a four-and-a-half-month absence caused by a right wrist injury, the 23-year-old has stormed into the fourth round, dropping just one set in his first three matches.
He will next face American 20th seed Tommy Paul, with Alcaraz now hoping the attention returns to what happens with his racket rather than what happens with his shirt.
