Two persons were killed and three injured in the disaster-sensitive Uttarakhand as incessant rains continued to wreak havoc with the authorities sounding high alert for the next 24 hours and declaring holidays in schools in all districts including Dehradun.
The chardham and Hemkund pilgrimages have been suspended till Sept 5 in view of the inclement weather conditions prevailing in the state, officials said.
In Munkatiya area in Rudraprayag district, two persons were killed and three injured when a boulder fell on a vehicle. “This morning in Rudraprayag district, a Max Bolero vehicle crashed at the corner of Munkatiya Landslide Zone after a huge boulder fell from above. There were a total of 11 passengers in the vehicle, out of which 2 people died and 3 people were injured. They were immediately rushed to Sonprayag Hospital by rescue teams and local people,” a police statement said.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami remained mostly busy in monitoring the grim situation in the hill state arising out of incessant rains. “We are on high alert in Uttarakhand. In some places there is a red alert and in other districts there is orange alert,” said the Chief Minister.
A series of disasters have left a big trail of death and destruction. On August 5, the Dharali market comprising scores of shops, hotels, homestays and houses in Uttarkashi district on the Gangotri highway was completely wiped out following calamitous flash floods that left 2 people dead and 67 others missing. The missing persons are still untraceable.
