An indefinite dharna of the unemployed youths against the Sept 21 question paper leak of the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) graduate-level examination was deferred till Oct 10 on Monday after Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accepted the major demands, including a CBI probe.

“We have deferred our dharna till Oct 10. We want the government to accept all our demands otherwise we will return to the dharna site,” said Suresh Singh, vice president of the Uttarakhand Berojgar Sangh, which is spearheading the agitation.

By 6 PM on Monday, most of the agitated youths dispersed from the dharna site after the recitation of bhajans.

“This is a good decision. We are satisfied,” said Manoj Uniyal, an unemployed youth.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister reached the dharna site near Parade Ground and addressed the youths to announce that his government would recommend a CBI probe in the paper leak. He indicated that other demands would also be looked into.

The Chief Minister said the government’s sole resolve was to ensure complete transparency in the examination process. He made an emotional appeal to the youth, saying that he understands that Uttarakhand’s youth and students prepare for government jobs after their studies. “This is the basis for their dreams”, he said.

The Chief Minister said the recent paper leak incident is being investigated by an SIT under the supervision of a retired High Court judge. “The Commission has also begun its work. Since the youths are still demanding a CBI investigation, therefore, the government will recommend a CBI inquiry into this matter. There will be no obstruction in this matter,” he said.

The Chief Minister said he could have held talks with the youths in his office also but after seeing their suffering, he decided to personally come to the dharna site. He said he fully stands with the youths.

The Chief Minister said the government has conducted more than 25,000 government recruitments in a transparent manner in the last four years, and there have been no complaints.

He said the complaint has been made in only one case, so the government is fully committed to removing all doubts from the minds of the youth. The Chief Minister said that last week, when the youths met him, he had made it clear that the government wants them to have no distrust, suspicion, or doubt.

The Chief Minister said that if any cases were filed against the youth during the protest, they would be withdrawn.
