The Uttarakhand government has decided to include 1983 revenue villages in the state under regular police jurisdiction in the wake of the High Court’s order.
“In line with the High Court’s order and previous cabinet decisions, the state government decided to include 1,983 revenue villages in the state under regular police jurisdiction to further strengthen the state’s law and order. This decision will directly implement regular police systems in rural and border areas of the districts, strengthening crime control, prompt action, and access to justice,” an official statement said.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the decision will further strengthen the law and order. “This historic step will enhance public security and confidence, create a safe and clean social environment, and make the police system more effective and accountable,” he said.
After the Ankita Bhandari murder case, the government had started the process of abolishing the revenue policing system in the state following the strict High Court’s order of abolishing the revenue police system.
The demand to replace the revenue police System gained ground during the probe into Ankita Bhandari’s murder in September 2022. The body of the 19-year-old, who worked as a receptionist at a resort run by Pulkit Arya, the son of expelled BJP leader Vinod Arya, was recovered from Chilla canal in Rishikesh on September 24 after she went missing for six days.
The area came under revenue police jurisdiction. Allegations were raised against the revenue police for not registering a complaint on time and even siding with the accused.
After the Ankita Bhandari murder case, the High Court directed the state government to abolish the system of revenue police.
