After a long spell of incessant rains that triggered big disasters in Uttarakhand, Met department on Thursday said the rainfall activity is likely to abate in the next 3-4 days in the hill state where most of the rivers including Ganga and Yamuna were still in spate.
“Though we have kept yellow alert in the next 3-4 days but the intensity of rains is likely to fall in this period,” said Rohit Thapliyal, an IMD scientist in Dehradun. The trend may cause the swollen rivers to recede from the danger level, experts said. This may also send some respite to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh where low-lying areas have been inundated due to floods in Yamuna and Ganga.
Meanwhile, a forest ranger died after being swept away by a rain-swollen drain in Nainital district on Wednesday. The man identified as Devendra Singh was a forest ranger in Betalghat forest range and was a resident of Dhaniyakot area of Kainchidham.
A day earlier, two brothers from Jaspur in Udhamsingh Nagar district washed away in swollen Ramganga river during the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony.
In Syanachatti area of Uttarkashi district, the work of removing debris to increase the drainage of the lake formed on the Yamuna river on the Yamunotri National Highway is being hindered due to continuous debris coming from the Gadgad stream amid heavy rains.
The water level has risen due to the accumulation of RBM up to two-three meters in the Syanachatti lake. Apart from this, due to continuous heavy rains in the nearby Janakichatti area on Wednesday night, the water of the Yamuna river started flowing on the Syanachatti bridge, after which it was closed for traffic from the point of view of safety.
On the other hand, due to landslides or soil erosion caused by continuous rains in the last few days, about 54 roads including national highways like Gangotri and Yamunotri and state highways in the state are blocked for traffic.
According to SEOC, teams of Public Works Department and Border Roads Organisation are engaged in opening the vehicular traffic routes.
Due to bad weather and blockage of roads due to it, the state government has suspended the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib and the CharDhams – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri till September 5.
