A West Bengal trekker was killed while three others were rescued from the high altitude Satopanth trek in the Badrinath area of Uttarakhand, police said on Saturday.
The Badrinath police station received information that four trekkers were stranded in Satopanth trek at an altitude of 4000-4500 meters in Badrinath area in Chamoli district with one of them in critical condition on Friday.
The SDRF team, led by Sub-Inspector Deepak Samant, immediately launched a rescue operation with necessary equipment and a satellite phone.
The SDRF men trekked difficult terrains in extremely adverse conditions to reach Satopanth. By the time SDRF personnel reached the area on Saturday morning, the trekker was found dead. The team brought the body to Laxmivan on a stretcher and later transported to Mana village. The body has been handed over to the district police.
The trekker has been identified as Sumanta Da, a resident of Baradron, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
Three other trekkers were also rescued safely by the SDRF personnel and brought to Mana village.
