Not every leopard is a man-eater. But in the Thursday episode of KBC with a rollover contestant Pratibha Singh, Amitabh Bachchan narrated an interesting anecdote of his school Sherwood College in the hill resort of Nainital where he had a close encounter with a leopard. Bachchan chose to describe the leopard as man-eater in the anecdote apparently to dramatize the incident.
The Big B narrated the anecdote after Pratibha faced an interesting question for Rs 3,00,000. The question was: which of these national parks is a part of the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature’s ‘Tarai Arc’ Landscape Program? As Pratibha was not confident of the answer, she decided to use her lifeline of audience support to answer Jim Corbett National Park. While explaining the answer, Bachchan told Pratibha that she could have taken a clue from Tarai word to answer Jim Corbett National Park.
Bachchan continued and said he knew a lot about mountains and Terai because his school, Sherwood College, was situated there. “Every couple of months, a man-eater was spotted in the school campus. These sightings usually happened at night, and by the next morning, the students would discover pug marks around the compound. He narrated a hilarious incident when all the students decided to catch a man-eater and they went with bats, hockey sticks and rackets. However, upon reaching the compound wall, they spotted a long tail of a man-eater and all the kids ran away.
He said, “Itni tezi se hum bhaage hain, itni tezi se hum kabhi apne jeevan mein nahi bhaage’. (I ran very fast. I never ran so fast in my whole life).
The audience erupted in laughter as Bachchan continued his story. He said a student at his school who had a hole in his heart also ran away after seeing the man-eater. This very student whom he didn’t name, also ran very fast. The moment everyone started running, this student ran with such speed that it shocked everyone. Big B’s anecdote left the audience in splits.
