Sixty eight couples have registered themselves for live-in relationships in Uttarakhand during the past one year under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Besides, 474,447 marriages were registered in just one year following the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand on Jan 27, 2025 mainly due to simplified procedures, an official statement has said.
The UCC will complete one year of implementation in the state on January 27, and during this period, 474,447 marriages have been registered so far.
Under the UCC, couples can now register their marriages online from anywhere, whereas under the old act, they had to be present at the sub-registrar’s office on a fixed date with two witnesses.
Before the UCC, marriages were registered under the ‘Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2010,’ the entire process of which was offline.
Under the UCC, marriage registration is done online, allowing couples or witnesses to apply for registration from anywhere, submitting their records and video statements. “This is why 474,447 marriages have been registered by Jan 19, 2026 in a period of about one year,” a top official said.
The average daily marriage registration under the UCC is around 1400, while under the previous act, the average daily marriage registration was only 67.
Furthermore, during this period, 316 people have obtained certificates for divorce while two have obtained certificates for the termination of live-in relationships, all through online means.
Under the UCC, a 15-day time limit is set for issuing marriage registration certificates after application, but on average, the registration certificate is being received within five days of application.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Uttarakhand has shown the way to other states by implementing the UCC. He said, “The transparency and ease with which the provisions of the UCC have been implemented in the past year have increased people’s trust in the entire process. This is why a large number of people are now registering under the UCC. The Uttarakhand UCC has proven to be a model law in every respect.”
