Around 9,000 pilgrims were safely brought back from the landslide-affected Chirwasa area on the Kedarnath trekking route in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Tuesday, officials said.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said its Sonprayag team took charge of managing the movement of pilgrims through the affected area to ensure their safety.
“Nearly 9,000 pilgrims were safely moved across the vulnerable stretch during the day,” an SDRF statement said.
The area had witnessed a tragic incident when a five-year-old boy, Yash, from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, was killed after being caught in the falling debris, while his father was injured. The father and son were returning after visiting the Kedarnath shrine when the incident occurred.
The latest evacuation comes amid heightened safety measures on the Kedarnath trekking route following heavy rains and landslides in the region on Sept 26-27.
