Two men carrying a reward of ₹10,000 each for allegedly cheating a woman of ₹40 lakh in a land deal were arrested from Shamli in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Subhash Chandra Sharma and his son Deepak Sharma, had been absconding since a case of alleged land fraud was registered against them at Raipur police station in April 2025.
According to police, the case was registered on April 28, 2025, on a complaint by Lakshmi Agarwal, a resident of Neshvilla Road in Dehradun. She alleged that Urmila Sharma, a resident of Aman Vihar on Sahastradhara Road, had agreed to sell her land in the Rajpur area for ₹45 lakh.
Urmila allegedly took a total of ₹40 lakh from Agarwal towards the deal but subsequently disappeared. When Agarwal made inquiries about the property, she allegedly found that the land had already been mortgaged with a bank against a loan of ₹18 lakh.
Police registered a case under Sections 420, 120B and 34 of the IPC.
During the investigation, police said, evidence emerged indicating the alleged involvement of Urmila’s husband Subhash Chandra Sharma and son Deepak Sharma in the transaction. The three accused subsequently remained absconding, following which SSP Dehradun Pramendra Dobal declared a reward of ₹10,000 each for information leading to their arrest.
After the SSP’s directive, police teams intensified efforts to trace the accused and activated their informer network and electronic surveillance to track the suspects.
The police team subsequently received information that Subhash and Deepak were hiding in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. A team raided the location and arrested both men, police said.
During interrogation, the two accused told police that the main accused, Urmila Sharma, had died. Police said they also obtained documents relating to her death from the arrested accused.
Subhash Chandra Sharma is a resident of Nalkhera village in Nakur area of Saharanpur district and was living in Aman Vihar, Sahastradhara Road, Dehradun. His son Deepak is also a resident of Nalkhera village and had been staying at the same Dehradun address.
