Early warning system installed at Vasundhara Tal to monitor GLOF risk

PrashantNews

A team from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology has successfully installed an early warning system and related equipment at Vasundhara Tal in Uttarakhand to help monitor potential glacial lake-related hazards.

The installation is an important step towards strengthening disaster preparedness in the Himalayan region, where glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), sudden releases of water from glacial lakes, can pose a serious threat to downstream areas.

The early warning system is intended to help monitor changing conditions and provide alerts that could support timely action in the event of a potential hazard.

Vasundhara Tal, a high-altitude lake in Chamoli district, has been identified as a site requiring close monitoring because of the potential risks associated with glacial lakes and rapidly changing Himalayan conditions.

The installation follows growing concerns over climate change, glacier retreat and the increasing need for scientific monitoring and early warning mechanisms in Uttarakhand’s mountain regions.

The system’s effectiveness will depend on continuous monitoring, reliable transmission of data and timely communication of warnings to disaster management authorities and vulnerable communities, experts said.
