Ending the decades old dominance of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), actor turned politician and founder of TVK C Joseph Vijay was sworn-in as new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on Sunday.

At a grand swearing in ceremony attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered oath of office and secrecy to Vijay and his cabinet colleagues at the jam-packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai that ushered in the first non-DMK, non-AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu in 60 years.

Vijay will head the coalition government with Congress as its partner, and other parties like VCK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML extending outside support. His cabinet was a mix of young and the experienced, with the 51 year-old actor-turned-politician’s core team finding place in his maiden ministry.

In his first address, Vijay said he was not from any royal lineage and that people welcomed and accepted him. He said he will not deceive people with false promises.

Congratulating Vijay, Rahul wrote: “My good wishes to Thiru Vijay – may he fulfil the hopes of the people of Tamil Nadu.”

Prior to entering politics, Vijay was one of the leading actors in Tamil cinema. He married Sankgeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan-born British Tamil who was born to an affluent business family, on 25 August 1999. They have two children: a son (Jason Sanjay) and a daughter (Dhivya Sasha).

In 2025, Sankgeetha filed divorce. In 2026, she filed a petition alleging that Vijay had denied her entry to their home and infidelity with an unnamed actress. The petition attracted media attention after Vijay appeared at an event with top actress Trisha Krishnan, who was also present in the swearing-in ceremony of Vijay on Sunday.
