Calling his death an irreparable loss to the nation, the Indian Army and himself personally, Singh recalled Lakhera as an outstanding military commander, visionary administrator and a humble leader. He fondly remembered serving under Lakhera during his early Army career and later succeeding him as Adjutant General at Army Headquarters.
