Football great Kylian Mbappe on Tuesday scored twice producing yet another dazzling performance to propel France into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Sweden.

The French Captain once again proved why he is regarded as one of the finest players of his generation, delivering two clinical finishes that not only sealed France’s comfortable win but also etched his name deeper into World Cup history.

Mbappe’s second goal at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey was particularly significant as it took his tally to 9 goals in FIFA World Cup knockout matches. With the emphatic finish, Mbappé became the all-time leading goal scorer in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Mbappé scored his ninth goal in the knockout stages (across just nine matches in three tournaments), most famously including a hat trick in the 2022 World Cup final. He surpassed Leônidas and Ronaldo of Brazil, both of whom had eight goals in World Cup knockout round play.

The 27-year-old also reached another landmark by taking his overall World Cup tally to 18 goals, strengthening his position among the competition’s all-time leading scorers one behind star striker Leonel Messi. Remarkably, six of those goals have come in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, making him one of the leading contenders for the Golden Boot along with Messi.

France controlled the contest from the opening whistle, dominating possession and creating chances with pace and precision. Sweden struggled to contain the fluid French attack as Mbappe repeatedly exploited gaps in the defence. His first goal settled French nerves before he added another after the break, while France’s third goal completed a dominant performance that left Sweden with no route back into the contest.

The victory sends France confidently into the last 16, where they will face Paraguay in what promises to be an intriguing knockout clash on Saturday (IST Sunday 2.30 AM). With Mbappe in scintillating form, Les Bleus will believe they have every chance of mounting another serious challenge for the World Cup title.

Having already won the tournament once and starred in multiple World Cups, Mbappe continues to redefine footballing excellence. His latest record-breaking display once again demonstrated that when the World Cup enters its decisive phase, few players are as devastating—or as reliable—as the French superstar.
