After 50 years, Jamrani project to be completed by 2029

After a delay of more than 50 years, the multipurpose Jamrani project on Gola river in Kumaon region would be completed by the year 2029 with a cost of ₹ 3678.23 crore, a top government official said on Wednesday.

During a review meeting of the Jamrani project which was presided over by Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan at the secretariate in Dehradun, Irrigation Secretary Yugal Kishore Pant, informed that the total cost of the Dam is now ₹3678.23 crore. This project will be completed by June 2029, he said.

The Jamrani project was conceptualized in 1975 with a cost of Rs 61 crore. During the period its cost has escalated many times due to procedural delays and bureaucratic hurdles.

The Chief Secretary discussed the Jamrani Dam and the Song Dam Drinking Water Project in detail and instructed the Irrigation Department to complete the two projects within the stipulated timeframe. He directed that all tenders and other necessary procedures related to the projects be completed on time. He also instructed that a complete flowchart of the project be prepared and each stage be completed within the designated time.

Bardhan stressed the need to increase the availability of necessary materials to expedite the construction work. He emphasized that while focusing on the quality of work, necessary first-party, second-party, and third-party quality control and evaluation should be conducted regularly.

The Chief Secretary stated that the rehabilitation work for those affected by the projects should be completed in a timely and efficient manner. He directed that continuous dialogue be maintained to ensure that the compensation, rehabilitation, and allocation work for the affected people is carried out with mutual coordination and trust.

Secretary Irrigation Pant said the Song Dam project in Dehradun is a 130.60-meter-high, 150 MLD gravity-based drinking water project, costing ₹2524.42 crore. Its construction will also be completed by November 2029.

In 2024, the government had made budgetary provisions of Rs 1260 crore for three multipurpose projects  — Jamrani, Lakhwar and Song which are hanging fire for decades.
