BJP may be in a celebration mode in Uttarakhand claiming a stupendous victory in the recently concluded panchayat elections.

But the party faced an embarrassment as most of the close relatives of its top leaders lost elections.

State BJP President Mahendra Bhatt was quick to dismiss suggestions that the party has suffered badly due to the loss of the close relatives of the party leaders. “Most of the candidates supported by BJP have won. This is a great victory,” said Bhatt.

Significantly, both Congress and BJP have not given party’s symbols to the candidates and only supported them.

But the party sources said nearly half a dozen close relatives of top BJP leaders lost.

In Nainital district, BJP MLA from Bhimtal Ram Singh Kaira’s daughter in law bit dust. In the same district, Nainital BJP MLA Sarita Arya’s son Mohit Arya also faced drubbing.

Similarly, Lansedown BJP MLA Dilip Rawat’s wife Neetu also lost zila panchayat election.

At a time when close kith and kin were losing elections, BJP MLA from Vikasnagar Munna Singh Chauhan’s wife Madhu became victorious from Dehradun.

In Congress party, a couple of close relatives of its top leaders won most of the elections. Sons of former state Congress chief and MLA from Chakrata Pritam Singh and former state irrigation minister Shurvir Singh Sajwan scored spectacular victories in the elections.
