A total lunar eclipse, which formed a rare celestial spectacle called blood moon, was visible on Sunday night in entire India but the beautiful scene was affected by clouds at many places.
“A total lunar eclipse occurred on 07-08 September, 2025 which was visible from all parts of India”, scientists said on Monday.
In view of the lunar eclipse, all the temples in India including the Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines in Uttarakhand remained closed since afternoon. These temples were reopened on Monday morning after all rituals.
The Moon entered penumbra on Sunday night and continued till early hours of Monday. The eclipse was .visible covering parts of Antarctica, western Pacific Ocean, Australasia, Asia, Indian Ocean, Europe and eastern Atlantic Ocean.
Visibility in India:
In India, all phases of the eclipse including totality were visible throughout India. The umbral phase of the eclipse began at 2157 hrs on Sunday night ending at 0127 hrs on Monday. The totality of this eclipse began at 2300 hrs on 07th September, 2025 and the ending time of the totality of this eclipse was 0023 hrs on 08th September, 2025.
The duration of the eclipse was 3 hour 30 minutes. The duration of totality of the eclipse was 1 hour 23 minutes. The next lunar eclipse which will be visible from India is on 03rd March, 2026 and the same is a total lunar eclipse.
The last lunar eclipse though partial was visible in India was on 28th October, 2023. Lunar Eclipse occurs on a full moon day when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon and when all the three objects are aligned. A total lunar eclipse will occur when the whole Moon comes under the umbral shadow of the Earth and the partial lunar eclipse occurs only when a part of the Moon comes under shadow of the Earth.
Before the Sutak period of the last lunar eclipse of the year began, the doors of temples in Uttarakhand including Badrinath, Kedarnath were closed after performing Puja on Sunday afternoon and the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar was cancelled and instead performed in the afternoon.
According to religious traditions, worshiping in temples is prohibited during this period and the doors were closed.
Rishi Prasad Sati, Vice President of Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee, said that due to the Sutak period of lunar eclipse, all the temples under the temple committee including Badrinath, Kedarnath temple were closed for darshan and worship at 12:50 pm on Sunday.
In Haridwar too, before the Sutak period started, major temples like Daksh Temple, Bilveshwar Temple, Daridra Bhanjan Temple, Maya Devi Temple, Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi were closed after performing the puja. The Ganga Aarti which is performed at 6:45 pm every evening at Har Ki Pauri was also performed at 12:30 pm. A large number of devotees participated in the Ganga Aarti held in the afternoon.
