Closure of power projects a temporary, precautionary step: UJVN

PrashantNews

The state-run UJVN Ltd on Tuesday said the most of its power houses have restarted generating electricity after remaining temporarily closed due to the rise of water level and silt in Yamuna and Tons rivers in Uttarakhand.

“As a precautionary step, the power houses are temporarily closed to protect the machines and other structures like dams and barrages etc,” a statement by UJVN said.

“The projects of UJVNL Limited are designed in such a way that they generate electricity even at 3000 ppm of silt. But beyond that level, there is a possibility of damage to the machines and in such a situation, there is a risk of major economic loss due to disruption of power generation for a long period. That is why when the amount of silt is high, the Corporation stops power generation by shutting down the machines for some time. When the situation becomes normal, power generation is restarted,” the statement said.

On July 21, the production from some powerhouses had to be stopped due to excessive silt level. The production of Chhibro, Khodri, Dhakrani, Dhalipur and Vyasi powerhouses was affected. During this time, the amount of ppm on Tons river reached 12060. Along with this, the amount of ppm at Vyasi dam on Yamuna river reached 7750 and at Dakpathar barrage it reached 30000. Due to this, production of Chhibro, Khodri, Dhakrani, Dhalipur and Vyasi powerhouses of the Corporation got affected from the evening of July 21.

The next day on Tuesday, the amount of silt in Tons river was 3000 ppm. After the water level reduced to 1000 ohms, power generation was started from Chhibro and Khodri power houses from 10:00 AM. Power generation has since been restarted from other power houses on Tuesday evening.

The corporation management makes preparations in a planned manner in advance for the rainy season. That is why even at present, the machines of all the power houses of the corporation were safely producing according to the level of river water and the amount of silt present. It is the effort of the efficient management of UJVNL Limited that this year so far, the corporation has not only generated more electricity than the electricity generation of last year, but this production is also going ahead of the target set so far for this year. In the financial year 2025–26, till date, the corporation has generated 1885.846 million units of electricity against the total target of 1845.063 million units, which is 40.783 million units more than the target set.

Also, the current power generation of the corporation is 106.30 million units more than 1779.538 million units generated till 21st July 2024 in the last financial year.
