The FIFA World Cup 2026 has entered its most exciting phase with the commencement of the Round of 32, where every match is a do-or-die contest. Following an action-packed group stage involving 48 nations, only 32 teams remain in contention for football’s biggest prize.

The knockout stage begins on June 29 (IST) with South Africa taking on Canada before five-time champions Brazil face Asian giants Japan later in the day. Germany will meet Paraguay, while the Netherlands lock horns with Morocco in two intriguing encounters on June 30. Ivory Coast will also face Norway as the opening round of eliminators gathers pace.

Defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, will begin their knockout campaign against Cape/Cabo Verde on July 4 (IST). The match is expected to attract worldwide attention as Messi looks to guide his side one step closer to another World Cup triumph. Other heavyweight clashes include France versus Sweden, England against DR Congo, Belgium taking on Senegal, Portugal facing Croatia, Spain meeting Austria, Switzerland playing Algeria, Australia locking horns with Egypt, the United States taking on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia facing Ghana, and Mexico battling Ecuador.

Unlike the league phase, there is no room for error in the knockout rounds. Any team that loses is immediately eliminated from the tournament, while the winners progress to the Round of 16, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals and ultimately the final.

The expanded 48-team World Cup has produced several surprises, with nations such as Cape Verde, Bosnia and Herzegovina, DR Congo and Norway earning places in the Round of 32 alongside traditional football powers. Fans across the globe are eagerly awaiting a fortnight of high-quality football, dramatic upsets and unforgettable moments as the race for the FIFA World Cup 2026 title intensifies.
