Four members of a family were killed and three others sustained serious injuries in a road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway near Halgoya village in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district on Sunday.

This was the first major road accident on Dehradun-Delhi expressway which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi early this year.

According to police, the family was travelling from Bahadurgarh in Haryana to Haridwar for a holy dip in the Ganga when their car allegedly missed an exit and began reversing on the high-speed expressway. A speeding Scorpio SUV rammed into the vehicle from behind with tremendous force, dragging it several metres before both vehicles overturned. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras.

Four occupants of the car died on the spot, while three others suffered critical injuries and were admitted to the district hospital. Police and district administration officials rushed to the scene and launched rescue operations. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

Authorities have begun an investigation into the crash and are examining CCTV footage to determine the exact sequence of events. The accident has once again highlighted the dangers of reversing or making sudden manoeuvres on high-speed expressways, where vehicles travel at speeds exceeding 100 kmph.
