The Congress high command on Tuesday removed Karan Mahara and appointed Ganesh Godiyal, a brahmin leader, as new president of the state party unit.
This is second term for Godiyal who was made the head of the state Congress unit following the removal of Kishore Upadhayay after the 2017 assembly elections. Godiyal is likely to lead the party in the 2027 assembly elections.
Significantly, Rawat, a Thakur leader, has recently suggested that Brahmin leaders should be given prominence in the party. After Rawat’s statement, the speculation was rife that Mahara might be ousted.
Significantly, Congress has lost two consecutive assembly elections since 2017.
Meanwhile, Pritam Singh was made as chairman of campaign committee and Harak Singh Rawat as Chairman of election management committee. Mahara will be special invitee in the CWC.
