Heavy rains in Dehradun on Thursday evening spoiled the Dussehra celebrations but failed to dampen its spirit.

Despite rains, thousands of people watched the rain-soaked effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran being put to flames at Parade Ground in Dehradun. The effigy of Ravan could not be burnt completely.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also visited Parade Ground to participate in the celebrations. “For giving blessings, the God Indra is also among us today,” Dhami said referring to rains.

The rains which began a little before 5 PM caused lots of damage to the effigies of Ravan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran. Most of the owners of food stall and vendors were seen in somber mood. “We came with high hopes to earn something big. But rains spoiled everything,” said Aslam Khan, who had put up a toy stall at Parade Ground area. Similar views were echoed by other people also.

Rains on Dussehra have occurred for the first time in many decades, old-timers said. “I have not seen such type of rains during Dussehra,” said Vimla Rautela of Mohini Road in the city.
