India enjoyed its most productive day at the Asian Games on Wednesday, sweeping all three compound archery team gold medals and adding another top prize in shooting to surge to 10 gold medals and eighth place in the overall standings.
The four gold medals, complemented by four bronze medals in boxing and wrestling, took India’s tally to 60 medals — 10 gold, 21 silver and 29 bronze.
The compound archers led the golden charge, completing a clean sweep of the men’s, women’s and mixed team events.
Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep began the day by defeating China 238-234 in the women’s compound team final to retain their Asian Games title. Their score also equalled the world record.
The men’s team of Sahil Jadhav, Kunal Dalal and Ganeshmani Ratnam then edged China 238-237 in a thrilling final to claim another gold.
Chikitha and Sahil completed the archery sweep by defeating South Korea in a dramatic mixed team final. The contest was tied at 157-157 after the regulation rounds before India prevailed in the shoot-off.
India’s fourth gold of the day came from the shooting range, where Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai won the mixed team trap event. The Indian pair set an Asian Games record with a score of 34 in the final and secured India’s first-ever gold in the event.
Neeru’s victory also capped a remarkable 24 hours for the shooter, who had won the individual women’s trap gold on Tuesday.
India added four bronze medals through boxing and wrestling. Priya Ghanghas, Kapil Pokhariya and Narender Berwal secured boxing bronzes, while Sunil Kumar won bronze in wrestling.
The surge lifted India from tenth to eighth place in the medal standings, underlining the breadth of the contingent’s campaign as the Aichi-Nagoya Games enter their final stages.
Wednesday’s haul also provided a significant boost to India’s gold-medal count, with the country now having reached double figures in golds at the Games.
