India’s Lakshya Sen suffered a disappointing early exit from the BWF World Championships, losing a closely fought three-game battle to Garrett Tan at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Sen went down 21-19, 19-21, 17-21 after winning the opening game and taking the match deep into a tense deciding game.

The Indian started strongly, edging out Tan 21-19 in the first game. However, the American fought back in the second, winning it 21-19 to level the contest.

The decider remained fiercely contested, but Tan held his nerve in the crucial stages to take the game 21-17 and seal the match.

For Sen, the defeat will be particularly disappointing at a World Championships being held on home soil. The 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medallist had entered the tournament with expectations of making a deep run in front of a passionate home crowd.
