A 38-year-old man allegedly killed his wife by slitting her neck with a sharp-edged weapon following a quarrel in Dehradun’s Mohini Road area on Thursday, police said.
Sonu Pal, 35, died instantly after she was allegedly attacked with the knife-type sharp-edged weapon by the accused, identified as Ramji Pal. After the murder, Pal went to a police chowki to surrender.
According to police, the couple hailed from Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and had moved to Dehradun barely two weeks ago in search of work. They had been living in a servant quarter located at the rear of a house in the Mohini Road area.
Police said Ramji worked as a mason, while Sonu was employed by the family living in the main house, doing cleaning and other domestic chores.
The couple had two children—a 11-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son. Both children were reportedly at school when the murder took place.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the couple had been quarrelling over an issue for the past few days. The dispute allegedly escalated on Thursday, with Ramji attacking Sonu with the sharp-edged weapon during the altercation. The brutal attack caused serious injuries to Sonu’s face and neck, resulting in her death on the spot. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the exact circumstances and motive behind the killing.
The police are also examining statements of people living in the house and others who may have information about the couple’s recent disputes. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, police said.
