The celebrations in village Sarkot in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand have been boisterous after the victory of 21-year-old Priyanka Negi on being elected as the village head in the recent panchayat elections.

Negi, an independent candidate, is perhaps the youngest village head. The age was not a constraint. But political analysts believe that she is a new example of the changing face of the rural India where many youngsters are brimming with a blend of traditional values and modern ideas.

In a viral video, a large number of people are seen celebrating the victory of Negi amid the beats of dhol-damau at Sarkot. The young Negi was quick to acknowledge the congratulations that have been pouring from different parts of the state saying she would work for the development of her village.

Buoyed by her victory, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday also congratulated Negi on her victory and spoke to her on phone. “Your election to this post not only reflects a strong democracy, but also symbolizes the power of women and the potential of youth,” the Chief Minister said.

“Certainly, together we will ensure the all-round development and progress of Sarkot village and other villages of the state will also be developed on the lines of Adarsh Gram Sarkot.
