Just two days before his birthday, Lionel Messi on Monday achieved yet another milestone in the World Cup by scoring his 17th goal. He became top all-time scorer breaking the 16 goals record of German football great Miroslav Klose by scoring a spectacular goal against Austra.

Messi (38) in the previous match produced a sensational hat-trick as Argentina opened their World Cup campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria in Kansas City. Messi became the oldest players in the World Cup to score a hat-trick breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 33 years and 130 days.

The Argentine captain had also created history by becoming the first player to feature in six FIFA World Cups, surpassing long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s record by a day.
