The Department of Posts, Government of India, on Thursday released a commemorative postage stamp to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who was among the first politicians to raise voice against the controversial Article 370 which was repealed by the Modi government in 2019.

Mookerjee went to Jammu and Kashmir in 1953 as part of his campaign against the Article 370. But he was arrested and later died in jail on June 23, 1953.

During an event held at Siri Fort Auditorium, Delhi, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, also showcased a vibrant cultural program featuring patriotic instrumental performances and an exhibition themed on the life, legacy, and contributions of Mookerjee.

The commemorative stamp was unveiled in the gracious presence of Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology.

The first stamp album was presented  by Col. Akhilesh Kumar Pandey, Chief Postmaster General, Delhi Circle. The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, institutional heads, and other notable dignitaries, adding to the significance of the occasion.

Mookerjee had launched a campaign against the Article 370 in 1953 after falling out of Jawharlal Nehru in 1953. Seeking its immediate abrogation, Mukherjee started a nation-wide campaign even opposing the measure tooth and nail. Mukherjee launched a campaign against the Article inside and outside Parliament also. He once said “Ek desh mein do vidhan, do Pradhan aur don Nishan nahin challenge (one nation cannot have two constitutions, two prime ministers and two national flags).

A big agitation was soon launched by the Bharatiya Jana Sangh along with Hindu Mahasabha and Jammu Praja Parishad against the article 370 seeking its abrogation. Since then, the issue became the major poll plank of BJP before it was finally repealed in 2019.
