The death toll in Dehradun on Wednesday rose to 21, a day after a series of cloudbursts triggered unprecedented flashfloods that wreaked havoc in and around Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Nearly 17 persons were still missing in the flashfloods, an official report said.
Elsewhere in Uttarakhand, three people died in different rain-related incidents in the past 48 hours.
The main focus of rescue operation was Karligard-Manjhar villages near Sahastradhara in Dehradun where cloudbursts created havoc. Three people were missing in these areas. “Our men are searching for survivors in these areas,” said a top police officer. Scores of hotels, resorts, shops, houses and vehicles were damaged in and around Sahastradhara area following the flash floods.
In a tragic incident in Parval area of Dehradun, nine people were killed and three went missing when the tractor on which they were travelling in was swept away in a swollen river. Two people however survived with injuries. SDRF personnel are using rafts to look for more bodies in the river.
Apart from Parval incident, 12 more people were killed in different incidents of flashfloods in Dehradun, the official report said.
After cleaning the famous Tapkeshwar temple which was completed submerged in the swollen Tamsa river, priests this morning held prayers.
However, majority of Rivers like Rispana, Song, Asan, Bindal and Bandal have started receding considerably following a respite from heavy rains.
Met department has warned that heavy rains may occur in the next 48 hours in the state.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has reviewed the progress of relief and rescue operations in Dehradun and other areas of the state.
Dhami said that all those affected by the heavy rainfall should be provided immediate assistance and efforts should be made on a war footing to find those who are missing.
He gave clear instructions that there should be no laxity in relief and rescue operations and instructed officials concerned to visit the affected areas and address the problems of the people.
Dhami directed top officials in all districts to maintain special vigilance in the coming days in light of the alert issued by the Meteorological Department.
Meanwhile, water and power supplies in many parts of Dehradun especially near Rispana and other rivers remained disrupted for the second day today.
Dehradun-Mussoorie highway was partially reopened following construction of a bailey bridge.
