Four people, including a 25-year-old woman from Delhi, were killed in separate incidents of landslides and house collapse as heavy rains battered Uttarakhand on Tuesday, disrupting road connectivity and sending Ganga and all its tributaries into spate.
On the Kedarnath trekking route in Rudraprayag district, 25-year-old Anjali, a resident of Shalimar Bagh in Delhi, was killed after being hit by a boulder near Gaurikund. She was travelling to Kedarnath with her husband, who escaped unhurt. A 34-year-old pilgrim from Karnataka, identified as Sidappa, was also injured in the incident.
In Pauri district, a two-storey house collapsed after a landslide struck Mehrgaon village in Lansdowne area Three people, including a child, died after being trapped under the debris. A 51-year-old woman was injured in the incident and shifted to a hospital. Pauri District Magistrate Swati Bhadauria visited the disaster-hit village and announced a compensation of Rs 14 lakh to the affected family.
Heavy rains also triggered landslides and blocked several roads across the state. Debris entered the premises of the Kalpeshwar Temple in Joshimath area of Chamoli district, though no casualties were reported.
In Rishikesh, two people travelling in a Max vehicle were trapped after it overturned in the swollen Been River. Both were rescued by the SDRF after a challenging operation and shifted to hospital.
In Dehradun’s Than village, six students of a private university were rescued from a dense forest after the Swarna River rose sharply following heavy rains. An SDRF team trekked nearly six kilometres to bring them back.
In Haridwar, the Ganga crossed its 293-metre warning level, flowing at 293.10 metres, prompting authorities to activate flood posts and step up monitoring in vulnerable areas. Most of the tributaries of Ganga including Mandakini and Alaknanda were in spate. In Dehradun, Rispana, Tons and Tamsa rose sharply following heavy rains in Mussoorie and Dehradun. All schools in Dehradun remained closed on Tuesday in the wake of orange alert.
For Wednesday, the IMD has again issued an orange alert for Dehradun and Bageshwar and a yellow alert for the rest of the state amid the continuing spell of heavy rain. The weather will remain wet till Aug 24 in the state, the IMD said. “Fairly Widespread to Widespread rainfall likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh during 18th-23rd August; Himachal Pradesh during 18th-22nd August; Uttarakhand during 18th-24th August,” it said.
