The Special Task Force (STF) on Sunday arrested a top gangster, who was wanted in the robbery of Rs 3.70 crore jewellery at a Tanishq showroom in Purnia district of Bihar a year ago.
STF Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Navneet Singh Bhullar said Rahul alias Mohammad Shakib, who was absconding since the Tanishq robbery in July last year, was arrested from Piran Kaliyar area of Haridwar district where he was living incognito.
On July 26, 2024, six members of the Subodh gang looted jewellery worth Rs 3.70 crore at gunpoint from a Tanishq showroom located in Khajanchi Haat area of Purnia district. One of the accused of the robbery, Chunmun Jha, was killed in a police encounter and the other four accused are in jail, while Shakib was absconding since the robbery.
Bhullar said that the Uttarakhand STF had received information from the Bihar STF that Shakib was living in the Kaliyar police station area, on which immediate action was taken and he was traced and arrested.
Bhullar said it has been learned that Shakib, along with Chunmun Jha and other members of the gang, had also killed a leader of the Lok Janshakti Party of Bihar in 2021, for which he has also served a two-year jail sentence.
